The iPhone manufacturer has discussed utilizing ChatGPT as well as in “active” conversations to get Gemini to the iPhone. According to Bloomberg, Apple is reportedly in “proactive discussions“ with Google to integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT with its Gemini generative artificial intelligence engine on the iPhone.
Tim Cook, the chief executive of Apple, has previously stated that the company is devoting “a significant amount of time and commitment” to establishing artificial intelligence functions, with intentions to make them available to users “at the end of this coming year.” According to a Bloomberg report, a combination of initial and third-party artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms could power the artificial intelligence features included in Apple devices. With the release of iOS 18 later this year, Apple’s models may enable on-device generative AI. Meanwhile, cloud-based AI services, such as text and image production, may be made possible through collaborations with companies like Google.
Should a Google agreement occur? Apple will not be the first business to work with the search engine powerhouse to integrate artificial intelligence capabilities into its phones. Earlier this year, Samsung introduced its Galaxy S24 smartphones, which employ Google’s AI technology and have features labeled with the Galaxy AI name. Additionally, Google’s AI is widely visible on its Pixel 8 smartphones. It is still up for debate whether or not to integrate Google’s AI technology into Apple products.
The iPhone manufacturer already has an ongoing arrangement with Google for an estimated 18 billion dollars a year to set Google Search as the standard on its handheld devices. However, these agreements have grown more divisive among regulators. The United States Bureau of Justice has accused Google of inappropriately exploiting these agreements to strengthen its search engine’s market dominance.
The nearly 2 billion iPhones that Apple now sells might benefit from Google’s AI tools if Apple and Google decide to enter into a possible artificial intelligence partnership. However, according to Bloomberg, Apple may be acknowledging that its generative artificial intelligence is less advanced than that of its rivals. Apple supposedly has its huge language model nicknamed Ajax, and workers have been testing an internal chatbot called Apple GPT. However, the company’s AI technology is reportedly less technologically advanced than that of competitors.
As per Bloomberg, it seems uncertain that Apple and Google will announce a deal before WWDC in June, so we will have to wait a bit to find out if they do sign an artificial intelligence (AI) partnership.
