SXSW 2024 Cheers Anti-AI Sentiment: Filmmaker Labels AI Support as ‘Alarming Nonsense’

A hint of anti-AI attitude marked much applause on Tuesday afternoon while attending the SXSW convention in Austin. The 2022 SXSW movie Everything Everywhere All at Once was the world premiere for DANIELS, the prestigious film directed and written by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. Seven Oscars were eventually won by the film, winning the Best Picture award, Best Director award, and Best Screenplay. During a discussion on the prospects of storytelling on Tuesday at SXSW, the two discussed handling the unavoidable expansion of artificial intelligence (AI), describing the technology as unique and dangerous.

As Kwan initially explained, modern capitalism only functioned because we forced people to work, not because we forced them to.

He informed the audience that your significance is your occupation and that we needed to alter our narrative. We are no longer human beings with inherent value. We are just valuable for what we can accomplish. For this reason, the current system makes finding fulfillment extremely difficult. He said, after pausing, that the system functions best when your needs are unsatisfied. It brings me a full round to AI. To thunderous screams and acclaim, Kwan went on.

Kwan agreed that numerous individuals would find the technology fantastic, adding that the audience must adore artificial intelligence based on the audible cheers and screams.

The art of magic, he claimed. Most likely, it will find a cure for cancer. We’ll likely get a tonne of environmental solutions from it. Kwan said, “This is a significant phenomenon.” However, I’m genuinely afraid of the new narrative that we’ll have to adapt to embrace this new advancement and convenience. A solo voice in the utterly silent audience cheered as he said, “It’s awful.”

How can his technology accomplish the confines of the present incentive framework and system? According to Kwan, this comes from a similar structure that has resulted in financial imbalance, global warming, and an overall lack of appreciation for ourselves and others around us.

Furthermore, he pointed out that if you are nervous about artificial intelligence, it’s likely because you’re aware in your heart that you will be the next. The worth of the employment opportunities will decrease even if they are not eliminated, right? According to him, it will gradually become more complex and normalized until we are unaware.

Kwan mentioned how social media has already changed our narrative. We became more alone than ever due to a technology that was supposed to bring us together. However, he clarified that we still can use AI to rewrite the systems and the future narrative.

However, he issued a warning, saying that we could still decide to overlook the advancement or even the utility of AI.

We’re not endorsing against using AI. I reject declarations as beliefs. It’s not a stiff lifestyle I support; it doesn’t work. Artificial Intelligence has arrived. According to Kwan, it will be quickly implemented in every area of our lives.

Scheinert concurred and suggested that individuals consider their motivations for utilizing AI instead.

Do you intend to utilize it to shape the world you want to live in? Are you attempting to make the most of it by concentrating on everything that truly matters to you and adding value to your life? Or are you merely attempting to generate some revenue for the billionaires, as it were? Scheinert enquired of the crowd. And there are no adverse effects if someone tells you. “Get on board” is fantastic, but I want to state that it is terrifying rubbish unequivocally. That is untrue. He said we should be delving thoroughly into how to use these things quite cautiously.

Then, there was a long round of applause from the crowd.

It appeared that they were also hesitant about artificial intelligence.

Kwan interrupted again, saying that people should consider why using AI seems so wrong while still surviving the current climate in which AI will be used everywhere. He also reminded the audience of the purpose of art.

What motivated our choice of writing style for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”? We took it to preserve one another, is the response. According to Kwan, every narrative we write attempts to protect our worth and identity against an ideology that seeks to downgrade ourselves and the individuals we love.
