APEC CEO Summit: “AI is Like Climate Change“Sundar Pichai

This Thursday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai compared artificial intelligence to “climate change” at the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) CEO summit.

The APEC CEO Summit 2023 is Asia Pacific’s most prominent conference for industry and government. The Summit brings together CEOs, entrepreneurs, thought leaders, and key stakeholders from the region of Asia-Pacific for two days of intense discussion on “global opportunities and challenges” that impact economic, environmental, and societal trends in the area.

On Thursday, November 16, 2023, at the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) CEO summit in San Francisco, Bloomberg’s Emily Chang questioned Pichai on “How to get a worldwide consensus on ‘smart AI regulation.’?”

“In some ways, it’s like climate change and the planet,” he remarked. “We all share the same planet.” That is true for AI. As a result, “you have to start building the frameworks globally,” he answered.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai compared artificial intelligence to climate change because it will spread globally, and people worldwide must work together to establish safeguards.

Pichai predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) “will proliferate” and said that “AI advances will get out to all the countries, and so it’s naturally the kind of technology that — I don’t think there’s any unilateral safety to be had.” If AI goes terribly in one country, it could affect other countries, making local regulation difficult.

Pichai stated that countries have a shared obligation to develop global frameworks, something he has previously cautioned about. He said he sees some progress in the negotiations, especially during the G7 Summit in Japan earlier this year. There was also an agreement between USA and China. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to begin a dialogue on AI. Chinese state media reports that China and the USA have agreed to establish an intergovernmental conference on artificial intelligence form a drug control working group, and increase flights.
