Authors Sue Nvidia for Copyright Infringement in AI Usage

Nvidia is a well-known company whose chips power artificial intelligence. Three authors have filed a lawsuit against it, claiming that it improperly trained its NeMo artificial intelligence platform using their copyrighted books.

Brian Keene, Abdi Nazemian, and Stewart O’Nan claimed that their works were part of a collection of roughly 196,640 volumes that trained NeMo to replicate conventional written language Before being removed in October owing to suspected copyright infringement.

The authors of the proposed class action said in a Friday night statement in federal court in San Francisco that Nvidia acknowledged using the dataset to train NeMo violated their copyrights, which is why the removal occurred.

Individuals in the US whose copyrighted works were used to train NeMo’s “big language models” during the previous three years are suing for unidentified damages.

The 2008 book Ghost Walk by Keene, the 2019 book Like a Love Story by Nazemian, and the 2007 novel Last Night at the Lobster by O’Nan are some of the works included in the accusation.

On Sunday, Nvidia refused to comment. The writers’ attorneys did not immediately answer requests for further comment on Sunday.

The complaint involves Nvidia and generative AI, which generates new content from inputs, including text, photos, and sounds. It is part of many lawsuits that writers and the New York Times have filed about this technology.

NeMo is promoted by Nvidia as a quick and inexpensive way to use generative AI.

Other businesses that have been sued regarding the use of technology include Microsoft and OpenAI, the company that developed the AI platform ChatGPT.

Investors now favor Nvidia because of the growth of AI.

Since the end of 2022, the stock price of the Santa Clara chipmaker has increased by about 600%, placing Nvidia’s market worth at almost 2.2 trillion dollars.
